Non-contact Thickness/Displacement Meter FAQ

What is measurement principle of the Non-contact Thickness/Displacement Meter?

Electrostatic capacitance is an ability to charge the electricity from the insulation conductor. The electrostatic capacitance of the VE series Gap Detector is the same structure as the condenser.

The following figure is showing the relation between the sensor and target measurement object. The sensor and target measurement object are electrically conducted and placed them opposite to each other. In those conditions, they produced the electrostatic capacitance in between the sensor and target measurement object. This capability is expressed into an expression in the following figure on the right. In this expression, there are no changes in the air dielectric (ε) and sensor electrode area (S) (fixed value). On the other hand, the electrostatic capacitance(C) is changed according to the gap between the sensor and target measurement object (D). Due to this, you can see the gap between the sensor and target measurement object (D) by measuring the electrostatic capacitance (C).

The Non-contact thickness/Displacement Meter is using this condition and calculating the gap between the sensor and target measurement object. It needs an electrical connecting to measure the electrostatic capacitance, so the sensor, target measurement object and the measurement detector need to be electrically conducted conditions. If you neglect this process or did not connect them properly, it causes a noise, unstable measurement value or measurement error. Please do not forget to provide them electrically conducted conditions.
