Setting general measurement condition

This section describes the "measurement mode setting", "measured value (measured quantity) setting", "level range setting", "frequency weighting compensation mode setting" and "dynamic characteristic mode setting".

1. Measurement mode setting

The sound level meter has two display modes of the instantaneous value (INST) and maximum value per second (Tact Max) modes, which are switched between each time you press the panel switch [Tact Max]. The currently selected measurement mode (INST or TMAX1) is displayed at the upper left corner of the screen.

◆Operating procedure

1. Select the secondary function of the panel switch.

2. Press the panel switch [2nd] to activate the secondary function.

3. Press the power switch [Tact Max].

Each time you press the panel switch [Tact Max], the instantaneous value (INST) and maximum value per second (TACT MAX) modes are switched.

2. Measured value (Measured quantity) setting

The measured value is changed by the panel switch [LP/Leq…]. Each time you press the panel switch [LP/Leq…], the measured value is switched.

<Notes>

LX (Percentile sound pressure level) data cannot be displayed on the normal measurement display screen. It can be displayed upon completion of LX calculation.

3. Level range setting

■Level range table

The level range setting value mode can be classified into the wide range setting mode and the normal setting mode which is combined with the level recorder. In normal measurement, it is recommended that to select the wide range setting mode which may not possibly cause over range or under range. Set the range according to your measurement purpose by referring the following table.

■Operation procedure

To set the level range value, press the panel switch [LEVEL ▲·▼] so that the bar indicator indicates the middle level. Each time you press the panels switch [LEVEL ▲·▼], the level range is incremented or decremented in 10dB steps.

■Over/Under level warning function

The over/under level warning function displays "OVER" if the input level is higher than the upper limit of the level range setting by 10dB or more or "UNDER" if it is lower than the lower limit of the level range setting. If overall warning "OVER" is displayed, reset the level range to a greater value, if under level warning "UNDER" is displayed, reset it to a smaller value. The display of "UNDER" is set to -5dB under the lower limit of the bar indicator (in the normal range setting mode) or to the lower limit (in the wide range setting mode).

4. Frequency weighting compensation mode setting

The sound level meter is provided with A, C and FLAT frequency weighting compensation settings. Please use the panel switch [A/C/FLAT] to set the desired frequency weighting compensation mode according to your measurement purpose.

■Measurement purpose and frequency weighting compensation mode

Please refer to the following table to set the frequency weighting compensation mode according to your measurement purpose.

A
 General sound level measurement
C
 Sound pressure approximation value measurement in acoustic measurement

 Magnitude reference measurement for low-frequency components, by comparison with measured value of A-weighted sound pressure level

FLAT
 Sound pressure value measurement in acoustic measurement

■Operation procedure

Each time you press the panel switch [A/C/FLAT], the frequency weighting compensation mode changes in the following order. A > C > FLAT > A …

5. Dynamic characteristic mode setting

The sound level meter is provided with four modes of dynamic characteristics such as FAST, SLOW, IMPULSE and 10ms. Set the desired time constant mode by the panel switch [F/S/IMP] according to your measurement purpose.

■Measurement purpose and dynamic characteristic mode

Please refer to the following table to set the dynamic characteristic mode according to your measurement purpose.

FAST
 General sound level measurement
SLOW

 Measurement of level with little variation with time

IMPULSE
 Measurement of impulsive sound
10 ms
 Acoustic measurement

■Operation procedure

Each time you press the panel switch [F/S/IMP], the dynamic characteristic mode change in the following order. FAST > SLOW > IMPULSE > 10ms > FAST > …
